The Olympics
The Olympics are an international competition in which each country is allowed to display its athletic talents in front of the world. There are the Summer and Winter Olympics that alternate every two years. To win a medal in the Olympics is a great accomplishment. The Olympics are popular because the history of Modern Olympics appeals to many people and because the competitions, such as ice hockey, offer a great source of entertainment.
First, the Modern Olympics have a large amount of history regarding the Olympics’ reinstatement, first winner, and awards. The Modern Olympics were reinstated in April, 1896 by King George of Greece after a gap of around 1500 years when no games were held. “I hereby proclaim the opening of the First International Olympic Games in Athens,” King George cried as the Modern Olympics were reinstated. (Christopher 13). The Modern Olympics’ first champion was James B. Connolly of the United States. He was awarded first prize in the Triple Jump, also known as “a hop, a step, and a jump” (Christopher 13). In 1896, the first prize in the Olympics was a silver medal with Zeus’ image on one side and the Greek Acropolis on the other honoring the Ancient Olympic Games, an olive branch, and a certificate. The runners-up were awarded a copper medal and a sprig of laurel (Oxlade/Ballheimer 15). The Olympics will continue to interest people because of its rich history.
Second, all sports in the Winter Olympics are held on either ice or snow, and ice hockey is very popular with Olympic spectators. Ice hockey is the lone field-type sport in the Winter Olympics (Oxlade/Ballheimer 26). The other winter sports are primarily racing sports such as skiing, bobsledding, and speed skating. Also, spectators enjoy hockey due to the speed of the game and the skill that is required. The majority of good ice hockey players have fast feet and hands so they can race to the puck, pass, and shoot with ease. Currently, Alex Ovechkin is considered one of the best hockey players (AP da Wiseone). This is most likely due to his amazing ability to maneuver the puck around defenders and shoot from difficult angles and positions. Ice hockey’s fast pace and exceptional players make it a favorite Winter Olympic sport.
In conclusion, the Olympics draw many people because it boasts a rich history and because it provides great entertainment.
